Campo de’ Fiori is one of the busiest squares in Rome. Full of bars, restaurants, pizzerias and pubs is an important meeting place for both tourists and the city’s youth. To make it even more unique, Campo de’ Fiori is the only Roman square where there are no churches.

It was conquered only to have the full possession of both banks of the River Tiber. Trastevere has come down to our days maintaining the unique character in line with that of the eternal city and has become one of the focal centers of night life.

Its winding streets covered with cobblestones overlooked by medieval houses make it a popular holiday destination and the presence of pubs and restaurants set it apart as the beating heart of the Roman night.

Its construction was begun by Vespasian in 72 AD but was only inaugurated in AD 80 by Emperor Titus and underwent structural changes during the reign of Domitian. The name “Colosseum”, which derives from the nearby statue of the Colossus of the Sun God (adaptation of the Colossus of Nero), spread only in the Middle Ages. Because of its “centrality” in the history of imperial Rome, the Colosseum is unanimously considered the symbol of Rome and his immortality.

Today is one of the most beautiful squares and artistic importance of the capital and largest destination for millions of tourists.

During the Baroque, Piazza Navona knows his heyday with the buildings and sculptures by masters such as Gian Lorenzo Bernini (Fountain of the Four Rivers in the center of the square, which is the Danube, the Ganges, the Nile and the Rio de la Plata, the four corners of the Earth), Francesco Borromini and Girolamo Rainaldi.

Its strategic location makes it the crossroads of some of the most important streets of the capital including Via dei Fori Imperiali, Via del Corso and Via del Plebiscito.

The present appearance of the square derives largely from the demolition and subsequent reconstruction took place between the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.

The presence of some of the finest monuments in the capital make it a popular holiday destination.

Among the most important monuments we mention Vittoriano (colossal monument to Vittorio Emanuele II) and Palazzo Venezia (which initially began as a home Pontifical).

It was also because of its timeless appeal that Fascism then decided to open Via dell’Impero along the archeological area (the current route of the Via dei Fori Imperiali), joining Piazza Venezia with the Colosseum. The road, straight running, would be used for military parades, and still held there for the parade of the Italian Republic Day June 2.

The Castle (which took its current name only in the 590) is famous for being attached to St. Peter by a narrow corridor called passetto that allowed many Popes to take refuge within its walls during the darkest in the history of Papal state.

Castel Sant’Angelo was then famous for having inspired the great master Giuseppe Verdi‘s opera Tosca in the composition.

The square was built between 1656 and 1667 by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. At its center stands the Vatican obelisk brought to Rome by Caligula to adorn the Circus of Nero, where St. Peter was killed. The wings of the colonnade are formed by 248 columns and topped by 140 statues.

On the right side of the basilica is visible part of the roof of the Sistine Chapel where the conclave takes place. From the Sistine Chapel it’s possible to access in the Vatican Museums.

The name comes from the so-called “the mountain” (Mons Testaceus): 35 meters of various fragments and debris, accumulated over the centuries as a relic of the jobs that were headed to the port of Ripa Grande.

It’s his double “soul” to make Testaccio unique: on the one hand Piazza Testaccio is the commercial heart of the district, thanks to the large market, Piazza Santa Maria on the other hand, the heart “social” of the district where stands the church of Santa Maria Liberator and Vittoria Theatre.
